 Si vous voulez venir l’hors d’un cours déjà entamé, svp assurez vous que ce n’est pas un début de cours (l’intro où je dois beaucoup parler et me concentrer) et ou qu’il y a de la place en m’écrivant à suzanne@mosaikashop.com, svp. Je privilégie une ambiance qui me permet de pouvoir continuer à diriger mes étudiants pendant ces heures. Merci pour votre compréhension, car faire faire aux débutants des œuvres à un haut niveau nécessite  beaucoup de direction de ma part. (If you would like to come during class hours, please make sure it is not during an introduction class, as I need to speak and concentrate a lot during that period, and you have to make sure I still have space available for you to work. During the teaching hours I accord a lot of importance to a calm environment this way I can direct my students fully. Teaching intricate mosaics to beginners is not an easy task, thank-you for understanding.)

 RAJASTHANI TAPESTRY MOSAICS                                                

Welcome to the first ever Rajasthani Mosaic Tapestry Workshop to be taught in Montreal!

So, what is Rajasthani Tapestry Mosaics anyway?  A brief description is as follows:  For years I have been collecting gorgeous wall hangings that are assembled in Gujarat, Rajasthan and Jaipur, India.  These hangings are richly embroidered and embellished with silks, jewels, sequins, seeds, beads, pearls, rhinestones, shells, etc.  Each piece of fabric is overlaid onto another piece of fabric, and woven together like a crazy quilt. 

The fabrics that are used for these wall hangings come from remnants that have been collected after ceremonies (such as religious celebrations or weddings). Gatherers scour deserts and villages for these treasures, often antique and one of a kind.  They are then taken back and assembled into these lush patchwork tapestries. 

It has been a desire of mine to re-create these tapestries in mosaics. After experimenting for a couple of years with various tiles and techniques, I feel I finally found the right materials and method that captures the beauty of these ancient fabric tapestries. 

 

In the workshop we will be using mastic, which we will pre-color with powder and liquid pigment, and embedding, using a variety of tesserae and findings.  I will bring lots of glass, tile, millefiori, 24 K gold, glitzy glass, copper tubing & wire, and beads.  Mastic, colorant, substrates and tools will also be provided.  We will learn how to lay a pattern and create sections that appear overlaid. The finished mosaics will be textural and remain ungrouted. Jewelry will not be included, though I will have some available for sale, so please feel free to bring your own from home.

I will bring additional embellishments available for sale, such as:

Gold, Swarovski crystals, rhinestone chain, ball chain, pearls, iridescent beads, jewelry pieces, various additional millefiori, sequined trims, etc.
