In this course you will learn to use the hammer and hardie
You will be encouraged to create a contemporary style mosaic using the direct method. This course has been developed to encourage you to learn to experiment in making mosaics using materials and techniques other than the traditional ones. You will learn about freedom in mosaics
Students will be introduced to cutting stone, glass, and ceramic with the hammer and hardie. We encourage you to bring your own ‘alien’ materials to explore using them in your work such as brick, nails, tin, shells, screws, keys etc. Sabina will guide you to create a mosaic of your own design or inspired by a design (but approved by teacher).
Here are some fine examples of this type of mosaics with some ‘alien’ elements to help inspire you;
Mosaic by Jo-Braun:
Mosaic by Lilie Legloannec:
During the introduction of the course Sabina will present you a rich slide show of all the latest artworks of contemporary mosaic masters from around the world. Thus opening your minds to what mosaics you can achieve if you let free…
Students will be shown how to play with different matters in mosaic: color, size, shapes, lines and surfaces. You will discover how your own personal rhythms can create patterns and unexpected movement in your works.
Here are for you are some more examples of mosaics following those means:

Dear
I have done a reversed method mosaic course five year ago in Ravenna, Italy – and I have since been looking for a hammer and hardie to buy in South Africa. Can you please advise me? Also where to get real “granite” type of material and not the prefab ones you see in tile shops?
I would really appreciate it if you can give me some information – and also a broshure of your courses for next year, please?
Best regards
Christine le Roux
Granite is not recommended for use with the hammer and hardy. TOOO hard! For the hammer you would have to get it from Italy. Many Italian online stores have them. The hammer is best used for marble or smalti, you would have to get the widia head for the smalti. As for our classes, just follow our blog and the new dates for 2015 will be up sometime in December.
