September is ‘back to school’, even though it never is really at Mosaikashop! The new space is really lovely with all the natural light which everybody gets to have at the same time! Come by to visit and admire my students at work. The opening hours are noted above.
L’Événement de la Semaine Italienne!
La semaine italienne sur St. Laurent fut un tel succès que par moment ça mosaïquait partout, installé sur le trottoir, sur le bac à poubelle, et la file pour la colle fut longue! Ouf! Grand merci à mes 10 étudiants volontaires qui se sont donné toute âme pendant ces jours. Sans vous, rien n’est plus possible!
Mosaikashop’s participation during the Italian Week on St. Laurent was such a hit that at some point people were just mosaicing wherever they could find a spot! The line for glue was sooo long. Wow! A big thank-you to all my student volunteers who gave out all their energy with all of their soul during these 3 days, without you, nothing is possible anymore.

À faire, à voir, ou à faire rêver…
Une visite à la grange-mosaïque de La Claude.
Claude Gagnon, “la Claude”, a consacré les dernières décennies à rénover et – littéralement – couvrir de mosaïque une veille grange qui est également sa maison. Au gré des dons des gens de la région de Rougemont qui lui apportaient les restes et retailles des travaux à leurs maisons et patios, les planchers, les murs, la piscine, les salles de bains de l’oeuvre de Mme Gagnon ont pris forme et vie. L’évolution du style et de la technique est perceptible, plus particulièrement entre le plancher de la pièce du bas (sans doute exécuté en premier) et celui de l’étage. L’artiste travaille en méthode directe, un grand “crazy work”, un gigantesque pique-assiette. Le résultat est impressionnant et touchant.
La visite des lieux est une expérience que je vous invite à partager! Parfait pour une visite d’automne, car en plein région de la cueillette des pommes! Zénaïde

A visit to the fabulous mosaic filled house of La Claude
Claude Gagnon also known as ‘la Claude’ spent years and years renovating and literally covering this old house which is also her home. Thanks to years of people donating unwanted tiles, Madame Gagnon used it all to transform the floors, walls, swimming pool, bathrooms into a work of art. The change in styles thanks to experience is particularly perceptible between the ground floor and the mosaic works on the second floor. The artist works the direct method, a huge ‘crazy work’, a gigantic pique-assiette. The result is impressive and touching. I invite you to visit this place, it is really quite an experience. VOIR RAVENNE ET FAIRE DE LA MOSAÏQUE
Bref compte rendu d’un trop court séjour
Habiter, manger, dormir et apprendre à faire de la mosaïque à l’ancienne durant une semaine en Italie! À Ravenne! Wow! Tel était le projet. C’était en juillet dernier. J’y suis encore en pensée.
À la Mosaic Art School, dirigée par madame Luciana Notturni, une règle de base se démarque des autres : il faut couper, couper et couper et tout le temps et encore. Entouré d’une équipe de professionnels attentifs à mes besoins (je ne suis pas un élève facile), j’ai coupé et coupé et … re-couper des smaltis italiens et du marbre. On dit qu’il faut de 4 à 6 mois pour former un bon manipulateur de la martinelle. Et une bonne dose de patience. Imaginez une semaine pour produire 2 mosaïques! Imaginez l’intensité de mon expérience!
Après avoir admiré les mosaïques vieilles de plus de 1500 ans dans les églises, baptistères et mausolées de Ravenne, vous contemplez votre travail, à la fin de la semaine, et vous ressentez l’impression d’avoir communiqué avec quelque chose de l’ordre du sacré! Et vous n’avez plus qu’une seule envie : y retourner.

SEE RAVENNA AND DOING MOSAIC
Few words about a briefly stay
Living, eating, sleeping and learning how to make ancient mosaic for a week in Italy! In Ravenna! Wow! That was the project. Last July. Still there in my mind. At Mosaic Art School, leaded by Mrs. Luciana Notturni, one on the main rule is as follow: you must cut, cut and cut again, all the time, more and more. Surrounded by a very professional and careful team to your requests, I… cut, cut and cut venetian smaltis and marble. One says that it needs 4 to 6 months in order to produce a good martinella user. Imagine one week to make… 2 mosaic pieces! Imagine the intensity of my artistic experience!
After admiring old and amazing mosaics in main city’s churches, mausoleums and others, you look at your work, at the end of the week, and you really feel to have been in touch with something sacred. And you get stick to the feeling to coming back.

Cette mosaïque est un hommage à notre merveilleux parc. Le parc de la Maison Valois.
Chaque mardi pendant 6 semaines en été, juste une heure avant un concert en plein air, J’installais ma table et tous étaient invité à travailler avec moi sur cet œuvre. J’ai rencontré tellement de monde magnifique and j’ai fais plein d’amis! Le plus gratifiant c’est que j’ai partagé ma passion et mon amour pour la mosaïque. Beaucoup de monde on eu la piqure! Plus de 50-60 personnes on participé et beaucoup sont revenu souvent y mettre leur patte! Je viens de livrer cette œuvre à la bibliothèque de Vaudreuil et le tout sera installé en permanence. Monica
This mosaic is a tribute to our lovely park. Le parc de la Maison-Valois
Every Tuesday (for 6 weeks)in our parc they host an outdoor concert during July & August. An hour before the concert I set up my mosaic and anyone in the park was invited to work on it with me. I met so many wonderful people and made lots of new friends. Most of all I had fun and passed along the love of making mosaics. I gave a couple of adults and kids the real mosaic bug. Probably about 50 to 60 different people participated also lots of repeat offenders. They were loyal and showed up every week.
I just delivered it to the Vaudreuil Library this morning where it will be permanently installed. Monica

Monday, September 17 at 7pm Martin Cheek will be giving a talk.
“The creative process: inspiration for mosaic”.
Martin Cheek graduated in graphic design from Exeter College of Art & Design in 1981. Having made award winning films as a student, he subsequently worked on several puppet animation projects including “The Wind in the Willows” “Paddington Bear” “Noddy in Toyland” and “Portland Bill”. He then set up his own production company Cheeky Films Ltd.
For many years Martin was a part time lecturer at the Royal College of Art in London. He is a former art critic for the Daily Express and now works full time as a professional mosaic artist in Broadstairs, England. Martin is regularly commissioned by both private and corporate clients as well as by museums. His work also appears in leading national magazines and newspapers as well as on television. His weekend courses in the UK and abroad continue to be popular with students from all over the world keen to learn the art of making mosaic. Over 2000 people have now attended Martin’s courses.
“Mosaic is becoming more and more popular both as an art form and as a decorative medium. I regard my mosaic work as a logical progression from animation, both of which involve building a coherent whole, displaying character and movement, from thousands of tiny elements. I am particularly inspired by the natural world and relish the challenge of capturing its organic grace in such a seemingly uncompromising medium.”
Martin wrote one of the first Mosaic Art books and had the first mosaic website in 1994. His world renowned mosaics are coveted by collector’s and his classes by students worldwide.

Les coups de cœur Mosaikashop!
Ginette a travaillé ces magnifiques fleurs avec beaucoup de détermination…elle a déjà commencé son prochain projet, même thème mais pour une table.

Louis-Philippe a bien interprété une photo en mosaïque. Beaucoup de section était un grand défi! Pas facile les personnages en mini! Il était content de découvrir le marbre!

Louise D a fait une interprétation exceptionnelle d’une photo d’un moine tibétain. En vrai la mosaïque est spectaculaire surtout dans les détails et choix de matériels. Smalti, porcelaine pour le visage, marbre, tuiles texturé, smalti ancien en cuivre. Très touchant cet homme et quel femme qui l’a fait!
Louise D, does it again with an exceptional interpretation of a photo of a Tibetan monk. In person this mosaic is spectacular, especially in the details and the choices of materials. Smalti, porcelaine for the face, marble, textured tiles, antique copper smalti. Very touching this man and what a woman the lady who made it.
Bravo a Peter! Il s’est lancé dans les fameuses colombes de Ravenne comme deuxième projet suite au premier cours. Je suis fière de lui. Maintenant il va continuer dans la mosaïque romaine.
Big bravo to Peter, he threw himself into the challenge of doing those famous doves from Ravenna; it is his second project following his first class. I am proud of him. Now he is going to continue with a roman mosaic project.
