Radical Dimensions in Glass Mosaic, Montreal, Quebec – Full Course Description:
This workshop invites students to see glass in a whole new way by introducing them to Kelley Knickerbocker’s “extreme sport” variations of glass-on-glass mosaics:
Flat Stacking, in which stained glass is layered on top of itself for unique color blending and 3-D effects;
Edge Stacking, in which clear, opaque, and translucent stained glass strips of varying heights/lengths are stacked on edge either singly or packed together so that the often beautifully striated riven edge is the visual focus
Dates: 6-8 September, 2013
Sessions: Friday 6:30 – 9:00pm, Saturday and Sunday 10:00am – 5:00pm
Course Location: Mosaikashop, 7240 Clark, Montreal, Quebec, H2R 2Y3 CANADA
Cost: $350 tuition, $50 materials
Format: Workshop is a combination of lecture/slideshow deconstructing the stacking process (Friday evening), demos, and lots of hands-on practice (Sat/Sun). Students will gain understanding and proficiency by creating one or more small mosaics incorporating these techniques, and in a 4-hr session on Sunday afternoon will learn to cut and set an unglazed porcelain background in contrast to the glass.
Additional topics covered: designing for these techniques, efficient cutting and setting tips, using mirror as a substrate for “glow control”, mixing these techniques with other media, and appropriate adhesives, tools, and applications.
What’s included: All supplies and materials will be provided, but students are welcome to supplement provided glass with glass from their own inventories.
Target audience: This workshop will be of greatest benefit to artists who have worked in glass and are looking for ways to “push the envelope” in how glass can be used in mosaics.
Registration Information: Contact Mosaikashop to register or for more info: suzanne@mosaikashop.com, (514) 582-7476
